Newfoundland’s at Paul’s Tree Farm Several members from the local Newfoundland Club, Janesville, WI were at Paul’s Tree Farm, 16239 W Beloit Newark Road, Brodhead, WI on December 6th and again on December 12th pulling Christmas trees out of the fields for customers. The members were also raising awareness about the breed and collecting donations to rehabilitate injured dogs. ‘Newfies’ are large dogs that weigh around 150 pounds, stand two feet high and have very agreeable dispositions. The dogs are trained for Search and Rescue and are known for their water rescue and pulling skills. Group members train their dogs for water rescue competition sanctioned by the American Kennel Club. Dogs that compete must show their pulling and rescue skills, including retrieving boats, oars, life jackets and swimming under capsized boats to rescue victims. They must be able to tow a life ring to a floundering swimmer and be able to circle around the victim so they can grab hold of their fur. They have a natural instinct to save, have webbed feet and water-repellant coats which make ‘Newfies’ excellent swimmers. Ten ‘Newfies’ were helping customers at Paul’s on December 12th. All of the customers at Paul’s fell in love with the dogs. Anyone wanting to learn more about the Newfoundland Club or make donations can call Nancy Long at (608) 741-9420 or Roger Danielsen at (262) 547-7191. |
