New Fir Tree Available at
Paul’s Tree Farm Again This Year.
Canaan fir will be available again this year as a
Choose & cut Christmas Tree at Paul's Tree Farm. We will also have
a few more Concolor (White) Fir available this year. The needle
length on this fir are a little longer than on other firs. We put
up a Concolor Fir last year and loved it! We cut it on November
14th & put it up December 6th & took it down on January 13th. It
had been up 39 days! It hardly lost a needle & the needles and
branches were soft & pliable just like the day we set it up.
Over the past ten years or so Paul’s Tree Farm has been experimenting
in the growing of Exotic Christmas trees. The definition of an "Exotic
tree" is one that normally doesn’t grow in the area.
Paul's Tree Farm has been raising Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, White
Spruce, Balsam Fir and Scotch Pine successfully for years. These can
hardly be called "exotic" any longer.
The most popular exotic tree is the Fraser Fir, but is difficult to
grow. As an alternative to Fraser Fir, Paul’s Tree Farm has been
planting Canaan Fir, along with Fraser Fir. Canaan Fir is a natural
cross between Balsam and Fraser. The Canaan resembles the Fraser, but is
easier to grow and more hardy like the Balsam. They are native to the
Canaan Valley in West Virginia. Paul's Tree Farm has several thousand in
the ground and they are doing very well. They are less susceptible to
root rot, drought and late Spring frosts. There will be a few Canaan Fir
big enough to cut this year. The supply will be limited.
Also being planted on an experimental basis are Meyer Spruce, Douglas
Fir (Deep Mountain variety), Grand Fir, Korean Fir, Nordmann Fir,
Siberian Fir and Serbian Spruce. Some of these varieties may prove to
not do well in Southern Wisconsin. Only time will tell.
The following Hybrid trees are also being grown and available this
year: Hybrid White Spruce, Hybrid P-70 Balsam Fir, Blister Rust
Resistant White Pine, "Misty Blue" variety of Colorado Blue Spruce and
Norway (Red Pine) from selected seed source. These have all proven to be
genetically superior as Christmas trees to the older regular varieties.
With the increasing popularity of the short needled varieties (Spruce
& Fir), Paul's Tree Farm is doing all they can to bring you the best
there is available on the market and a huge selection of varieties of
Christmas trees. Of course the longer needle varieties of Pines (Scotch,
White & Norway) will continue to be available. They are not as popular
as in the past, but they will always be in demand.
